Handout:
Teaching Graphic Novels in The Classroom

Description:
This book describes in detail many different methods teachers can use to teach students graphic novels. Not only does it show different methods, but the book goes into specific detail about each individual graphic novel discussed in the book. It gives you discussion topics, research and writing ideas, and also projects where the students get to do their own story telling. It is a really good sidekick to have when teaching certain graphic novels

Why this book?
I chose this book because when it comes to visual literacy, graphic novels are probably my biggest weakness. I chose to read it in hopes it would give me a better understanding of what it would look like to include a graphic novel in the classroom. After reading this text I feel a lot more confident in how I can incorporate these books into the classroom and it showed me just how fun graphic novels can be. I can see a lot of students enjoying the project ideas given in this book.

Teaching ideas:

1.    This book has multiple different discussion topics and research ideas for quite a few different graphic novels (ex: Pg. 60).  These will be very helpful in the class because it gave me some really valuable and important discussion topics to use with certain books to help continue a good understanding of the novels.
2.    The book also provides ideas for the students to write about and even do illustration (ex: pg. 88, 86). I think the Illustration part is super interesting because illustration is not something I thought of doing in my classroom but now it’s something I think could be really beneficial to the students when writing their own story ideas.
3.    Lastly, this book gives so many project ideas to use with the students and they’re all based on students own ideas and creativity rather than being solely text based. Each project explains a connection to the text but then goes further by allowing the students to come up with their own ideas.

Challenges:
Some challenges I see happening are mostly in the projects. For example, in the sandman one I can see a lot of students either being too scared to be vulnerable and write their own thoughts and ideas. The reason I think this is because I remember as a student being too scared to share my own ideas and creativity and since these projects are so based on the student I could see some of them being intimidated. I also see some issues with using illustration because some students could be really bad at drawing obviously art is a very difficult thing so getting quality illustrations could be an issue.
