Handout:

  1. Please include a detailed description of the text. Take into consideration that your colleagues might not be familiar with the text that you have chosen. A detailed description will include everything necessary for your classmates to gain an understanding of the text without reading it. Your job is to introduce the text in a complete way so that it is possible for others to decide when, where, and how this text might be appropriate.
This text is all about ways we can get our students more involved with reading in our classrooms. we see student doing fake reading a ll. the time with their phones behind the books or them sleeping with their heads on the desk. This book provides us with many ideas to get students involved. For example, with the Blended classroom model which incorporates choice reading as a way to keep students reading while still involving the classics
  2. Please explain why you chose this text. What was your rationale? How does your understanding of this text influence your thinking about your teaching.
I chose this text because seeing the cover reminded me of something I did a lot as a student when reading books like The Odyssey and Hamlet in class. So I was curious how the author would have approached this situation that I know a lot of teachers must face.

  1. Please include some teaching ideas. How do you envision employing this text in a secondary English language arts classroom? Provide at least 3 specific ideas for what is possible with this text.
    Blended Model
Incorporate both the classics and choice reading into the classroom

Have my own library of books for the kids to choose from

Incorporate reading goals and change curriculum to be about their choice reading as well as the classics.

    Talking books:

Having discussions about the books they are reading will prepare them for college

It will also get the more interested in their reading.

To keep discussion on track set up time limits and points for being involved in discussion

    Summative assessment options:

Literary essay or Blog, Podcast, or Websites

    Students again have choice

Students will be able to pick the best format for them

    4. Please consider some challenges to using strategies from this text. What are the potential issues that may arise from using these strategies? Predict students’ responses. How will you address these challenges?
    • Some students will not engage in reading regardless
    • The openness of choice with summative assessments could be too overwhelming in this case individual meetings might be necessary with students.
    • With choice reading it could be hard to grade certain things without actually reading the book yourself.
