Learning Letter

Learning Letter Miranda Haag 1. Reflect on the work you’ve completed in the course (text presentations, content portfolio, etc.) The work I have done in this class has really taught me a lot about the reality of bbeing a teacher. For example, through reading the different books I learned a lot more about specific methods teachers use in their classrooms and that really helped give me an actual image in my head of what my career might look like moving forward. The biggest thing I learned is that as an educator I am always going to be learning and reflecting in order to make sure my practices are good for the students. I’ve learned that you never stop recreating yourself as a teacher and I will always be trying to improve my skills. 2. Reflect on the theories and concepts we explored in readings and discussions Through the reading and discussions, I also learned how different me and some of my classmate’s perspective are on different teaching ideas. But I think hearing e...

Content Portfolio

Content Portfolio Visual Literacy Artifact 1: The first example of Speaking and listening I want to talk about is from high school in Social studies, where instead of just reading the text book at home and trying to understand the events that wen on in history, a group of students would be assigned a section and then they would bee required to act out the events that were happening. The intent for this would be that student gain a better understanding of the reality of the historic events in our books by getting to watch it rather than just reading it.  Reflection:   This type of visual lesson was extremely helpful as a student because reading and understanding what these events actually was really difficult for me. And I could see myself using this as a teacher especially when reading Shakespeare.Because, shakespearian writing can be very difficult to understand since its written differently than mo...

Visual Literacy/Graphic Novel Presentation

Powerpoint: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1cLMqn9aVgqQVENvWqHh7LRf2CQnBukG1fiPxrSag26s/edit?usp=sharing Handout: T eaching Graphic Novels in The Classroom Description: This book describes in detail many different methods teachers can use to teach students graphic novels. Not only does it show different methods, but the book goes into specific detail about each individual graphic novel discussed in the book. It gives you discussion topics, research and writing ideas, and also projects where the students get to do their own story telling. It is a really good sidekick to have when teaching certain graphic novels Why this book? I chose this book because when it comes to visual literacy, graphic novels are probably my biggest weakness. I chose to read it in hopes it would give me a better understanding of what it would look like to include a graphic novel in the classroom. After reading this text I feel a lot more confident in how I can incorporate these books into ...

Something I found in the common core standards was that they wanted students to compare and contrast films or productions of text and how closely they matched. This wasn't something I remember ever doing in school but something I think would be fun and interesting to do. The other one I liked was when it said make strategical use of digital media because I feel like especially in English its easy to forget the importance of using digital media. And I think that using digital media will help a broader number of students have better understanding of what we would be teaching.

I haven't had much experience with graphic novels besides reading Batman in Dr.Greens class. but I do think they would be helpful to have graphic novel options in my class. I believe this because we do see a lot of students who are simply bored with reading therefore they have a really hard time comprehending books and finishing them. because of this I think the visuals on graphic novels keep kids entertained and helps them comprehend the storyline much better because it is laid out infant of them. Also, I think a lot of students are just a lot better with graphic novel books because the color of the pictures in graphic novels catches their eye so much more than the typical black and white text in normal books. Since I haven't had a lot of experience with graphic novels myself I'm excited to read more and get more experience with them so I can help students using them in the future.
